Better late than perfect

The moviequips.ca updates are up. There are more pages than premieres, though. Here's the extra candy, just in time for Hallowe'en weekend:

Elsewhere, check out how the Bytowne Cinema is celebrating CKCU radio's 35th anniversary - With film. Gratis screenings. A gratis gracias, I guess.

Out there, you probably saw it already. The Charlie Chaplin Time Traveller video on Youtube. Apparently there's a scene in The Circus (1928) where Charlie time travels, bumping into himself (see below), all caught on film... no, not really. That's an actual scene from Chaplin's The Circus. Here's the link to the Youtube channel for the production company that posted the "Time Traveller" video that's gone viral this week:

I just think it's great Charlie Chaplin is in the news again. Here's the link to his site, where you can find the box set of DVDs that includes the premiere reel for The Circus cited above:

Thanks for checking in. Happy Hallowe'en, hopefully it won't snow.

Waiting, waiting... waiting

Just tightening the bolts on the site's October 29 - November 5 premieres updates, likely to be up before the weekend - if a couple of films can be verified by then. I could just go ahead and post the site with those pages, but it's happened enough times that this or that theatre's online listing was initially wrong. I'd rather give it a day or two.

By the way, where's AMC Kanata in Google's Ottawa-Gatineau movie theatre map? ah well.

A couple of upcoming shows that look promising if premiering in town this end-of-week are Aftershock (AMC Kanata), China's Oscar entry about a survivor of the Tangshan earthquake, and Conviction (SilverCity Gloucester, AMC Kanata), starring Hilary Swank and based on the true story about a woman who battles to free her wrongly convicted brother. Here are the links for these two flicks:

And speaking of film premieres, the National Arts Centre is hosting such a thing on Tuesday for the new cinematic adaptation of Mordecai Richler's novel Barney's Version. It's invite only, but here's the NAC site info about it anyhow:

Lips, loose and flaming

Kinda lame, probably seen it before... Separated at Birth: (left) Patricia Quinn's huge lip syncing mouth in the opening sequence for The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) and (right) the Dairy Queen TV ads' animated mouth...

Elsewhere, lips clips-wise, this possible winter screening here looks interesting:

An Apps Aside (aka Apt Apps?)

In checking out the upcoming Ottawa International Animation Festival's 2010 site (http://animationfestival.ca/index.php), their new app link led me to the very cool AppShopper site (http://appshopper.com). AppShopper is basically an iTunes app store portal that's better organized than the iTunes app store, from what I've experienced in using both. The former also has an app, and AppShopper will send you wish list updates if you sign up (free). Looking through the AppShopper catalogue is also free. An iTunes account is required if you want any of their/iTunes' apps, 'though.

A screen shot of the AppShopper site - appshopper.com

Ottawa International Animation Festival
This is the official iPhone app for the Ottawa International Animation Festival - one of the largest animation festivals in the world - that takes place this year from October 20-24, 2010.
The free OIAF'10 app page at the iTunes store - GoSee

Here are a couple more fun and "free", timely apps that caught my eye:

NFB Films
With the NFB FILMS iPhone app you can watch over 1000 movies – documentaries, animations and trailers – FREE on your iPhone or iPod touch. This app is compatible with the iPad, but we will be releasing a custom iPad app shortly.

Pulling it Together

hey. Hopefully you had a great Thanksgiving long weekend. Screening-wise, we opted to check out Iron Man 2 on vod. Pretty much the same as Robin Hood, unfortunately. Phenomenal cast, boring movie.

It's mid-week already, and I'm in the process of collecting and verifying info for the site's October 15-21 updates. The Bytowne is geared up for the CFI's Animation Festival starting mid-week next week, and the Mayfair's got the Writer's Festival slated to start next Thursday. Some of the Ottawa and Gatineau theatre sites look like they're in the midst of pulling it together. In the meantime, here's what the list of upcoming local premieres looks like so far (although, I'm unsure about Conviction, and Fados looks like a pre-15th one-night deal at Cinéma 9 after-all):

It's Kind of a Funny Story

Fados completes the musical trilogy of award-winning Carlos Saura (Flamenco, 1995; Tango, 1998). Using Lisbon as a backdrop, he explores Portugal’s most emblematic musical genre (fado) and its haunting spirit of saudade (melancholy). Tracing its African and Brazilian origins up to the new wave of modern faudistas, he ingeniously deploys mirrors, back projections, lighting effects, and lush colors to frame each song, ranging from a campfire ringed by sinuous dancers to a balletic catfight between two jealous women to a thrilling desgarrada (musical duel) in a fado café. The result is a ravishing fusion of cinema, song, dance and instrumental numbers.

Klaatu Barada, like, Nikto

I suppose waking this blog on the date 10.10.10 would have been cool. uh, no thanks.

Currently updating http://www.moviequips.ca with the next seven days' worth of local premieres, trying to get it done before the weekend but we'll see how long it takes.

Once it's updated, the site will finally have Cinéma 9 Gatineau added to the Capital Screens links list, in the Cinéphemera section.

I also missed a couple of premieres last time around. So, 'Fubar II' and 'Route 132' will be in the Previous Premieres area, in the Marquee section.

More later. Thanks for checking in.
